Discovery in Chicago

A city with a great legacy

Chicago is a high-rolling, ball-playing metropolis on the blustery shores of mighty Lake Michigan, with all the charm and splendour befitting one of the USA’s biggest cities. It’s famed for a food culture of big-plate American cuisine, influenced by its vibrant districts. Wander between soaring glass skyscrapers, the greenery of Millennium Park and the glittering commercialism of the aptly named Magnificent Mile. Chicago is where hometown staples provide a nostalgic backdrop to the city’s spirited, modern flair.

What to admire

Running from busy expressway Lake Shore Drive to Sibley Boulevard in the south, Michigan Avenue is a thriving stretch of leafy parks, inviting eateries and world-class museums. If you’re new to Chicago, it’s the perfect place to begin exploring, with a stroll through Millennium Park’s neat patchwork of gardens, art installations and exhibition spaces. This oasis covers 24.5 acres and features an extensive year-round programme of free events, including concerts and group workouts.

Another must-see attraction is the nearby Willis Tower, formerly known as the Sears Tower. Ascend to the Skydeck for outstanding vistas over the city. Those with a daring streak can step out into the glass cubes that protrude from the 103rd floor. Collectively called ‘The Ledge’, these boxes provide unparalleled panoramic views from a staggering 412m in the air.

For something (almost) back down to earth, venture out onto the shimmering waters of Lake Michigan on a boat tour. Cruises depart daily from Navy Pier, allowing you to see Chicago's various neighbourhoods from a different perspective.

What to experience

Chicago is a town of famously passionate sports fans, with the Chicago Bulls basketball team commanding legions of supporters across the city. The season runs from October to April, so head to United Center to catch a fast-paced, exhilarating game. If you’re visiting between April and September, you can take a trip to the historic Wrigley Field alongside the hometown crowd to cheer on the Chicago Cubs at a baseball game.

If you prefer retail therapy, be sure to make one of your stops the Magnificent Mile. This major shopping and entertainment district is a hive of luxury commerce with its gleaming designer boutiques. Later, experience live music and elegant Chicago nightlife at one of the atmospheric piano bars found along the Mile.

What to savour

Food is big business in Chicago. You’re never far from a generous slice of famed deep-dish pizza or a legendary local hot dog. The city’s booming gastro-culture is more sophisticated and diverse than that though, with new and inventive restaurants opening all the time.

The neighbourhood of River North is a prime spot for food lovers, hosting everything from lively steakhouses and casual street-food outlets to ambient seafood restaurants and Asian-fusion hotspots. Sample Mexican, Italian and even Peruvian dishes alongside the local American classics with a twist. For something truly unique to the city, head west to Humboldt Park and try a hearty, Puerto Rican-inspired jibarito. This sandwich was invented in Chicago, with its stack of meat, cheese and garlic mayonnaise encased in mouth-watering fried plantain instead of bread.

Where to stay

Many Chicagoan hotels are steeped in city heritage, displayed in their exquisite architecture and refined elegance. The Viceroy Chicago certainly falls into this category, with its ornate brick façade, ‘folding’ glass tower and mid-century chic interiors. A stay here puts you just minutes from Oak Street Beach, although you can soak up the sun without ever having to leave the hotel thanks to its relaxing outdoor lounge and turquoise-blue pool. You’ll also be able to experience one of the premier Chicago rooftop bars at Devereaux on the 18th floor. Sip craft cocktails such as the local Gold Coast Martini as you admire the incredible panorama over the city.
