GHA DISCOVERY in Hong Kong

A fushion of eastern and western cultures

Dubbed as Asia’s World City, Hong Kong offers visitors a dynamic fusion of East and West. Comprising Hong Kong Island, the Kowloon Peninsula, the New Territories and more than 200 islands, this diverse destination features everything from ancient temples to elegant bars. It's a feast for all the senses, with opportunities to dine on Michelin-starred dim sum or slurp noodles from a street stand. Head to Hong Kong for a truly memorable experience.

What to admire

One of the best ways to get your bearings is from Victoria Peak, the highest point in Hong Kong. Located on the western half of Hong Kong Island, The Peak is home to the Sky Terrace, which sits 428 metres above sea level and offers panoramic views. To get there, hop on the historic Peak Tram, one of the world’s oldest funicular railways.

Another high-flying experience is a visit to the Tian Tan Buddha on Lantau Island. The Ngong Ping cable car takes you high across lush forests and glistening bodies of water to reach the Po Lin monastery, where you'll find the 34-metre-high bronze Buddha. Head up the 268 stone steps to encounter this giant figure and admire views of the sea and mountains.

The Star Ferry has been operating since 1898 and connects Kowloon with Hong Kong Island. It's a convenient way to cross the harbour and also treats you to sweeping coastal vistas. Boardings just before 8pm include a mid-crossing pause so that you can watch the Symphony of Lights from the ultimate vantage point. As the largest permanent light and sound show in the world, this breathtaking spectacle incorporates LED screens and lasers and illuminates 44 buildings on both sides of the harbour.

What to experience

Temple Street Night Market in central Kowloon is a vibrant thoroughfare, bustling with hawker stalls selling souvenirs and carts serving local delicacies. Be prepared for the sensory overload of bright neon lights, mouthwatering smells wafting from food stands and vendors enthusiastically bargaining with customers for the best deal.

For something more serene, Man Mo Temple on Sheung Wan’s Hollywood Road is dedicated to the gods of literature (Man) and water (Mo). The temple is filled with incense burning from hanging coils and provides a calming respite from the buzzy city streets outside. You're also likely to spot students praying for luck with their upcoming exams.

A visit to the Cantonese Opera is a cultural highlight that makes a lasting impression. You'll see performers dressed in elaborate costumes and wearing dramatic make-up as they sing in a distinctive falsetto style. If you're intrigued by the performance, you can visit the Xiqu Centre and take one-hour guided tours that recount the history of Cantonese Opera and highlight the centre's design features.

What to savour

No trip to Hong Kong is complete without dim sum. Meaning 'touch your heart', dim sum comprises more than 150 recipes, usually served up in bamboo steamers. Dishes are designed to be shared and you can order classics like steamed shrimp dumplings har gow and barbecued pork-filled buns char siu bao, or just see what tempts your taste buds as the trolley passes your table.

Another local speciality is roasted goose, which can be found everywhere from high-end restaurants to street stalls. The whole bird is marinated in a secret concoction of spices, then cooked and carved before being eaten with plum sauce.

Hong Kong locals love bakeries, and you'll smell the tempting aromas of baked goods as you walk down any city street. The most popular items are warm pineapple buns – whose name comes from their cracked, crusted tops – and egg tarts, based on Portuguese pasteis de nata custard tarts.
